And face it, you’re probably not an expert in either of them. You are an expert in what you do!

I was once told, “you’re an expert in social media, you’re never going to be an accountant. I’m an accountant, I’ll never be an expert social media. I’ll do your books, you do my social media. Deal?”


That was the best decision I ever made! I used to dread going over my accounting each week. I’d rather clean my refrigerator than do accounting! When it came to doing my taxes each year, I needed a few stiff drinks when I was done. No more! That fee was sooooo worth it!

And I bet many of you look at social media and online marketing — like creating a website and blogging — in the same way. It’s not your thing!

The problem is that your business can’t succeed without both!

Sure, there may be businesses that don’t need to find new customers, but that’s rare. Most businesses

  • have competition
  • depend on getting found in the Google search engine
  • need to be known as the go-to place for whatever it is they offer

Today’s marketing takes time. It’s like going to a live networking event at any given time of the day.

You get out of it what you put into it.

But who has that kind of time?

Ah, we’ve hit on one of the conundrums of entrepreneurship: Either you learn how to do it yourself or you hire someone to do it for you.

That’s one of the secrets that Derek Halpern talks about in the video in the prior SCORE blog post.

“Focus on high-value work.”

You have to figure it out. It has to be part of your business plan and your budget. If you can’t afford to hire someone to do it for you — which in the beginning, that may be the case — then you need to learn how to do it yourself. I present a class on social media marketing for SCORE at least once a month and they also have Quickbooks classes for beginners, intermediate and advanced users.
